Student Spotlight: Wildlife Conservation At Bangor University

Olivia is in her 2nd year studying BSc Wildlife Conservation at Bangor University. Throughout this article she talks about her course, the universities location and the on-site facilities!
Bangor seemed to me the perfect choice of University at which to study Wildlife conservation since it is surrounded by beautiful areas of countryside such as Snowdonia. It’s also just a stone's throw away from important sites for wildlife such as Lafan sands and Newborough forest. I attended one of the open days and found Bangor to have a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and I knew it was the place for me.
At Bangor, the lecturers and staff are friendly and approachable. Students receive lots of academic support such as being assigned a personal tutor in their first year and having access to services such as employability and study skills sessions.
My course has many practical elements which I enjoy. I get to carry out fieldwork which involves measuring the diversity of seaweed on a rocky shore, doing lab practicals, and going on field trips to places like Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve, Llanberis and the University’s Botanical Gardens at Treborth. I am really looking forward to carrying out research for my dissertation project next year.
I lived in halls during my first year and became good friends with my flat mates. It was great getting to meet new people and be involved in some of the events during fresher's week. I was at St Mary's accommodation and found the onsite facilities such as the computer room and shop really useful. St Mary's is also only a 5-minute walk away from Bangor Mountain and the Ogwen trail, which is a cycle track that runs through Bangor all the way to Bethesda, so there are some great walks nearby which I made the most of.
This year I joined SODA (The Musical Theatre Society) and we put on a production of Beauty and the Beast which was great fun to be a part of. I am also involved in the Conservation Society which holds weekly events such as volunteer days with the North Wales Wildlife Trust.
