Turn your passion into your profession. Get Into Teaching is a free information service from the Department for Education designed to support you throughout your journey to becoming a teacher.
You will find advice and guidance to help you decide if teaching is right for you, as well as inspiring stories from others who are training to teach.
You can access free support services for as much or as little help as you need. In teaching, as you grow, so does your career.
Opportunities for progression are varied, whether that be through a position as head of year or head of subject, or through taking on a pastoral role. With added responsibilities you can expect additional pay rewards.

Salary and benefits
For teaching the next generation you’re entitled to a competitive salary, generous holidays, and a substantial pension.
You’ll get more days holiday than people in many other professions. In school, full-time teachers work 195 days per year.
For comparison, you’d work 227 days per year (on average) if you worked full time in an office.

Journey In
As a teacher you can teach in the following settings:
- early years (children up to the age of 5)
- primary (ages 5 to 11)
- secondary (ages 11 to 18)
- further education (for example, teaching at further education colleges or sixth form colleges)

Teacher Degree Apprenticeship
The Teacher (Degree) Apprenticeship (TDA) is a new and exciting route into teaching.
- Allow you to ‘earn while you learn’
- You will gain all the qualifications you need to teach: a degree and qualified teacher status (QTS)
- Courses will launch for application from autumn 2024
- You will be employed by a school and gain experience in the classroom whilst studying
- By the end of the 4 year course, you will be qualified to work as a teacher
