Liam Roberts aged 21 Barratt Apprentice Exeter Division

Liam finished school with no qualifications because his family had emigrated to Egypt. On his return to the UK he found that his schooling was not to UK standards and was considering joining the marines to use his language skills, or applying for an apprenticeship as this would allow him to use his practical skills and gain qualifications at the same time. Liam was successful in gaining employment with Barratt and embarked on a two year apprenticeship as a bricklayer. At the start Liam was a quiet and shy young man but it didn’t take long for him to show his potential. He showed great skill, motivation and a positive attitude to his college and onsite learning. Whilst working toward his NVQ level 2 Liam received extra support and mentoring through the Barratt academy and was placed with experienced tradespeople to learn his craft. Liam passed his level 2 in bricklaying and his functional skills in both Maths and English, a great achievement for him. This helped him develop as a person and motivated him to carry on with his apprenticeship, completing his level 3 NVQ and functional skills level 2 early as his attitude to his studies was exemplary. During this time Liam also became involved in extra activities such as attending apprentice recruitment events and going into schools to encourage others to consider an apprenticeship. He has also achieved his First Aid, Manual Handling, Abrasive Wheels and Working at Heights certificates and his CSCS card. He competed at the Skillbuild competition, winning the regional heats and taking part in the finals in Birmingham in Nov 2014 In the same year Liam also won the Reece French Memorial Award at City Plymouth College and Barratt Exeter Apprentice of the Year. More recently Liam was highly commended at the Apprentice awards regional finals. You can see him collecting his award on the video. Liam has now set up his own part time business completing decorative brickwork projects for clients as well as working with the subcontractors that he trained with.

This is what Liam has to say if you are considering an apprenticeship

I am practical and not keen on full time study so my apprenticeship has given me so much. I have developed my interpersonal skills, won so many awards that I never thought I could and passed Level 2 functional skills (A level standard) and my Level 3 NVQ in Bricklaying. I have developed my business skills that I am now using in my own business. Before my apprenticeship with Barratt my ambitions were limited to using my language skills with limited thoughts of the future. Now I am motivated to be an exemplary bricklayer running my own part time business with prospects of working in a business partnership in a supervisory role and higher management aspirations. You will be amazed at what an apprenticeship can bring if you work hard.

Jordan Brown: Level 2 Carpenter: Barratt Developments National Annual Get Recognised Award Winner 2014-15

Jordan joined Barratt a year ago embarking on his Level 2 carpentry apprenticeship working for Barratt Exeter division. Jordan was offered the job with Barratt as in his interview he showed a strong desire to work in the industry and learn a trade. Although he came across a quiet young man he did show that he was positive and motivated to do well. We were not to be disappointed, his strong work ethic and ability to be a strong team player has impressed everyone he comes into contact with on a daily basis on site. He has grown in confidence shows an enthusiasm for ‘going that extra mile’ for customers and his work colleagues. In the past year Jordan has really grown and developed personally and his practical skills are excellent when learning his trade. His determination to pass his qualification is already showing in his grades, Jordan demonstrates A&B plus grades in all areas and his work based assessor is extremely pleased with his progress. Jordan is enjoying his apprenticeship so much he is already planning to do his Level 3 and become a qualified carpenter. On completion of his level 3 apprenticeship Jordan wishes progress through the Barratt Academy to either complete our Assistant Site Manager Programme which will allow him to gain his NVQ level 4 or possibly join our Foundation Degree Programme that is run in conjunction with Sheffield Hallam University. Jordan is currently working to such a high standard in all areas, showing great motivation toward his apprenticeship and future career prospects.He has recently been awarded in October 2015, winner of the Barratt Developments National Annual Get Recognised Apprentice award. A great achievement, as Jordan was selected from a number of Apprentices who were nominated from our divisions throughout the United Kingdom. Jordan is just one of our Apprentices we are extremely proud of and demonstrates how young people have so much to contribute to the future of our business and industry.
