Helping people to feel good about themselves is important in today’s society, and we all know that although looking great isn’t the be-all and end-all, how we look can have a massive impact on how we feel about ourselves. Working in the beauty industry requires a passion for people as well as some specialist knowledge and there are many different career paths that you can choose from.
If you are thinking about a career in the beauty industry, here are some ideas of what you could consider doing:
Massage Therapist
A massage therapist manipulates muscles through massage. As a massage therapist, you can specialise in sports massage or baby massage if you like, or work in a spa and use massage to help people with relaxation.

For a career as a massage therapist, it is recommended that you either study for a Level 3 Diploma in Massage or Complementary Therapies, or an apprenticeship.
Hairdresser
One of the things that lockdown has taught us is how much people value going to the hairdressers. There have even been stories about people travelling abroad to countries where hairdressers are allowed to open and this is a testament to how important they are to us.
As a hairdresser you would look after the health of people’s hair, applying treatments and advising how to look after it, as well as cutting, styling, and colouring.
You might work in a specialist hairdresser’s, local salon, in TV or film, or for yourself as a mobile hairdresser. You could style hair for weddings and parties, specialise in men’s hair, or specialise in specific hair types.
Although you don’t strictly need any qualifications to cut people’s hair, it is
recommended that you do training – either a college course – a level 2 or 3 diploma in hairdressing or an apprenticeship.
Make-Up Artist
In a similar way to a hairdresser, there are a number of ways that you can work as a make-up artist. Whether you are looking to make someone look beautiful for a special occasion, transform them for a sci-fi film, or indeed be creative for the catwalk, there is something for everyone.
There are many directions that you can go in as a make-up artist and numerous prestigious awards that can be won in certain areas of make-up artistry for those who are interested. Most make-up artists work freelance, and you need to have a good knowledge of skin, products, and creative artistic talent as well.
For a career as a make-up artist, it is recommended that you have a diploma level 3 to give you the technical knowledge but experience is also very important.
Wig Retailer
There are many reasons why people decide to wear wigs. For some it is to cover the signs of hair loss, others like the flexibility over styles and colours that it gives – and everything else in between. Choosing the right wig(s) is important and this is where a wig retailer is important.
Supplying good quality wigs is vital, as well as helping your customers to choose the right one. You would normally work with hospitals or medical centres, but also for private customers.
For a career as a wig retailer, you need to know how to run a retail business as well as have a good understanding of wigs and the people who use them.
Tattoo Artist
If you have a passion for tattoos, a lot of artistic talent and meticulous eye for detail in everything that you do, a career as a
tattoo artist could be for you. As a tattoo artist, your profession is all about how good your art is. However, there is also a lot more behind what you do. You need to remember that hygiene is extremely important as well as being able to run a successful business.
Most tattoo artists study art to a high level and do apprenticeships to learn the trade. An apprenticeship should teach you all that you need to know about the skills needed to perform tattoos, the hygiene requirements, and the behind-the-scenes of running a successful tattoo business.
Working in the beauty industry can be hard work but also very fulfilling. It generally requires you to have a good rapport with people, a desire to make their feel better about themselves whilst having the more specific skills of your particular discipline.
