Company Profile

The wonderful world of Murphy apprentices

Murphy, or J. Murphy & Sons Limited – to give us our full name, was founded in 1951 by construction entrepreneur John Murphy. Almost 70 years later, Murphy is a leading engineering and construction company, working round the globe to deliver world-class infrastructure that improves lives.

We recognise that developing new talent is central to the success of our business and the future of the engineering and construction industry. So, as an apprentice at Murphy you’ll be given the opportunity to work on some of the industry’s most prestigious projects, helping to drive smarter, safer and greener solutions for clients.
You’re the future of the Murphy world: the new starters who’ll one day grow to be our experts and our leaders. And because we need talent like that across our business, we run two different apprenticeship schemes: our degree apprenticeship and our trades apprenticeship.

Degree apprenticeships

Civil Engineering. Quantity Surveying. Two specialisms where you’d usually have to go to university first, then get a career afterwards. Not here. Study for your degree at a highly respected university (either Warwick or London South Bank) and at the same time, work towards relevant experience in a live role with us.

What do I need?

  • C or above in GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent)
  • Willingness to work hard and to keep learning
  • Trades apprenticeship

As one of the only businesses within our sector with its own workforce of tradespeople, it’s vital we continue to train up apprentices who share our values because you’ll go on to be the professionals who deliver everything we do.

In conjunction with the Construction Industry Training Board, this two-year apprenticeship, balancing work and college studies, will expose you to some of the most incredible projects we have to offer right from your first day.

From year to year, we tend to offer:

  • business administration
  • carpentry
  • civil engineering
  • construction operations
  • electrical
  • joinery
  • mechanical engineering and fitting
  • plant maintenance
  • welding and fabrication

We don’t look for any particular qualifications here, so all you need is the willingness to work hard and to keep learning. Whichever apprenticeship you join, you’ll work on some of the industry’s most prestigious projects, helping to drive smarter, safer and greener solutions for clients.

The kind of work you’ll always remember, because you’ll barely believe what you and your team achieved. That’s because there’s something just a little bit wonderful about Murphy. Once you get to know us, we’re sure you’ll think so too. Welcome to the wonderful world of Murphy
