You've heard the pros and cons of both university and apprenticeships, and you've already started to collect prospectuses and visit some campuses to get an idea of uni life. Apprenticeships might still be something of a mystery though, so we've spoken to some current apprentices at leading companies about their experiences so far, and their advice for you. Abi | Accounting & Business Advisory Apprentice What made you choose an apprenticeship? University never appealed to me, even though I got good grades at GCSE and A Level. I think that apprenticeships are a great alternative as I am doing the same job as a graduate, but without the large amount of debt, whilst earning at the same time. What are you enjoying the most about RSM? The training I receive is really thorough, and includes courses in other parts of the country where I get to meet other apprentices in the same boat as me. There is also a very social side to RSM; we have a "pay day club" and go on an annual office outing to the races. Although the work is sometimes challenging, I love my job, and the rewards and benefits that RSM offers apprentices are amazing. Do you have any advice for school leavers considering a career in accounting? My advice to you is that if you are considering a career in accountancy, do an apprenticeship rather than going to university, as not having a degree will never hold you back at RSM. Cara | Digital Innovation Degree Apprentice What made you choose an apprenticeship? My favourite subjects at school were Engineering, Chemistry and Drama. An apprenticeship is allowing me to combine my interest in technology with my science-based background, as well as allowing me to pursue a creative path. What are you enjoying the most about EY? Everyone gave me such a warm welcome; I instantly felt like part of the family. Since then, I've met people from so many different backgrounds, both inside EY and on our ADA technology college course. It's been really enriching to share perspectives and learn from each other. Do you have any advice for school leavers considering a career in the Digital industry? Pick an area that interests you and you'll always find new things to discover, improve yourself and stay engaged.A "try anything" attitude will be your greatest friend. I've found great opportunities through taking myself out of my comfort zone to network and get involved in things that interest me. Don't shy away from what you want to achieve; there's every chance you'll succeed. Kodi | Engineering Apprentice What made you choose an apprenticeship? Primarily, I chose to do an Engineering Apprenticeship because I believed it was using mathematics and science in conjunction in order to overcome and solve challenges. Getting paid to study for my qualifications was obviously a bonus! What are you enjoying the most about Coca-Cola? I get to work with multiple different people every day, who have learnt and grown through different generations. They allow me to absorb their skills and knowledge to work on new innovative ideas and, in turn, I can continue to pass this onto the next generation. It's like making history on a daily basis. Do you have any advice for school leavers considering a career in engineering? An apprenticeship is the perfect way to achieve qualifications, something I think is crucial, and work in a real life environment that helps you learn the full engineering process - it's so much more than just "fixing" things!
